Anyone needing an introduction to Radar systems, technology and applications might like to look at signing up for this class. I'll be teaching it this winter with 10 weekly three hour lectures starting 6:00pm January 22, 2014, at the UCSD Extension University City Center, 6256 Greenwich Dr., San Diego. This course will be similar in content to that offered through MIT Lincoln Labs. Text used will be the 3rd edition of Merrill Skolnik's "Introduction to Radar Systems"

General Course Description

In this introductory course you will learn the following:
  • The Radar equation needed for the basic understanding of radar developed with examples of its use in radar system design for ground, airborne, space, and maritime applications.
  •  Propagation issues, such as attenuation, multipath effects and ducting, are described.
  • The concept of radar cross-section, waveform design, antennas, transmitter and receiver characteristics and the detection of radar signals in the presence of noise.
  • Detection of small targets in the presence of radar echoes from sea, land, or weather "clutter".
  • characteristics of "clutter" are discussed,
  • moving target indicator (MTI) and Pulse Doppler techniques.
  • target tracking and target parameter estimation.
  • antenna characteristics
  • The last lecture discusses radar transmitters and receivers.
