Sweden releases sonar images of submarine violation | World news | The Guardian

Sweden has released an image of underwater tracks which it says is clear proof
that a foreign submarine illegally entered its waters last month, in an event which triggered a national search mission reminiscent of the cold war.

The sonar image shows tracks on the sea floor, which the head of the armed forces says were left by the submarine. “The military can confirm that a small submarine breached Sweden’s territorial waters. We can exclude all alternative explanations,” General Sverker Göranson told a news conference.

He said Sweden was no closer to finding out which country was behind the incursion. Suspicion had fallen on Russia, but its defence ministry denied the allegation, dismissing the Swedish search operation as a “tragicomedy”.
Swedes Find Definitive Evidence of Submarine, Russians Call Them Unmanly

But it is unclear how much Sweden can do to counteract what is all but certainly Russian military activity on the doorstep of its capital. Sweden's military has seen its funding plummet in recent years, and the country's coastline is a notorious haven for submarine warfare. The littorals around Stockholm represent one of the most difficult terrains in the world for spotting submarines. On Friday, Löfven noted has a coastline as long as the entire east coast of the United States. And even if Swedish politicians decisively increase
funding for its military, the effects of that spending are unlikely to be felt for several years. Troops have to be trained. Equipment must be procured, then deployed.

But maybe the best part of this turn in the bizarre story is the reaction in Russia. The paper Rossiyskaya Gazeta argues in a commentary that it was a NATO boat in  Stockholm. "But to say that means to admit that the Russians are innocent," the paper
writes, according to a translation by Sweden's Aftonbladet. "But such a manly step is one the Swedish military is apparently incapable of taking. As a result, Mr. Göranson  behaves as if he has water in the mouth."

Confirmed submarine in the Stockholm archipelago - Swedish Armed Forces

- The decisive observation is made by the Swedish Armed Forces’ sensors. It is a result of a highly skilled operational conduct. The observation meets the requirements for the highest level of assessment grading, confirmed submarine, says Supreme Commander Sverker Göranson.

The Swedish Armed Forces will not account for details on this observation since it could disclose information on Swedish abilities and capacities. The analysis cannot determine the nationality of the intruder. [indicates no passive acoustic signature]

In addition to the decisive observation, a number of other observations have been analyzed and reach the second highest level of assessment grading. A picture taken by a member of the public shows an object moving at a speed of approximately 1 knot. The picture also shows the kind of spray that arises when water is pushed out of scuttles at
the top of a submarine.

A second observation was made by a naval corvette. Following strong indications on its sensors, a closer examination of the area was conducted and recently made traces were found on the bottom. Another observation was made by a resident in the archipelago, observing an underwater body with distinctive features. Sensors from the Swedish
Armed Forces also confirmed echoes in the area. Similar observations were made by multiple credible sources.
