The University System of Maryland has named Robert Caret, president at the University of Massachusetts System and a former president at Towson University, as its next chancellor, system officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Caret was named president of the University of Massachusetts System, which comprises 70,000 students at five campuses, in July 2011. He took the job at the Amherst campus after serving as president at Towson for eight years. He had also served as faculty member, executive vice
president and dean at Towson.
Caret will succeed William E. Kirwan, who announced in May that he would step down after 12 years at the helm.

University of Massachusetts President Robert L. Caret has been appointed to lead the University of Maryland system, officials in Maryland announced Wednesday.
Anne Moultrie, a spokeswoman for the Maryland system, told the Globe that the Board of Regents has voted to appoint Caret. More details were expected to be announced later Wednesday.
Wallace D. Loh, president of the University of Maryland flagship, at College Park, tweeted congratulations to Caret: “Welcome home to Maryland!”
In a statement to UMass board chairman Henry Thomas, Caret said:
“I am writing to let you know that I have accepted the position of Chancellor of the University System of Maryland. The formal announcement will occur tomorrow. While I am excited and energized to return to Maryland and the University System, of which I was a part of for 29 years, I am at the same time saddened that I will be leaving this great system, the University of Massachusetts, and this great state.
“I have enjoyed my four years working with you for the benefit of the Commonwealth. However, Liz and I could not say no to an offer to return to our home system and to also be closer to our family. We will miss being part of the UMass family.” Caret said.
The news of Caret’s departure sent shock waves through higher education circles. Caret recently signed a three-year extension to his contract with the UMass board of trustees.
UMass system spokesman Robert Connolly had said in a statement earlier Wednesday that Caret “is in serious discussions with the University System of Maryland about its chancellorship, discussions that continue, and has not resigned as president of the University of Massachusetts.”
