Small and Short-Range Radar Systems - CRC Press Book
Small and Short-Range Radar Systems, Web Content | by Gregory L. Charvat
Gregory L. Charvat Ph.D, is author of Small and Short-Range Radar systems, Chief Technology Officer at Humatics Corporation, co-founded Hyperfine Research Inc. and Butterfly Network Inc. editor of the book series Modern and Practical Approaches to Electrical Engineering, guest commentator on CNN, CBS, Sky News, and others. As visiting research scientist at MIT Media Lab he created the Time of Flight Microwave Camera. As technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory he created a through-wall radar imaging system that won best paper at the 2010 MSS Tri-Services Radar Symposium and is an MIT Office of the Provost 2011 research highlight. Greg has taught short radar courses at MIT, where his Build a Small Radar course was the top-ranked MIT professional education course in 2011 and has become widely adopted by other universities, laboratories, and private organizations. Starting at an Early Age, Greg developed radar systems, rail SAR imaging sensors, phased array radar systems; holds numerous patents; has developed many other sensors, radio and audio equipment.
Coupling theory with reality, from derivation to implementation of actual radar systems, Small and Short-Range Radar Systems analyzes and then provides design procedures and working design examples of small and short-range radar systems. Discussing applications from automotive to through-wall imaging, autonomous vehicle, and beyond, the practical text supplies high-level descriptions, theoretical derrivations, back-of-envelope calculations, explanations of processing algorithms, and case studies for each type of small radar system covered, including continuous wave (CW), ultrawideband (UWB) impulse, linear frequency modulation (FM), linear rail synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and phased array. This essential reference:
- Explains how to design your own radar devices
- Demonstrates how to process data from small radar sensors
- Provides real-world, measured radar data to test algorithms before investing development time

Small and Short-Range Radar Systems
Enthusiasts who are interested in building, using, or buying small radar systems are the intended audience. The book provides the basics for modulation and modes (e.g., Doppler, ranging, and imaging) of the most common types of small radars. Many specific cases are provided complete with bills of materials, block diagrams, circuit descriptions, experiments, raw data obtained from measurements, videos of experiments, and MATLAB scripts to process the data. This may be the first book for enthusiasts to turn to when they begin dealing with short-range radars. Starting from scratch, they can build a custom-made system and obtain measured data in their own lab in a short period of time thanks to this text.
It is interesting to note that the author, Gregory L. Charvat, is also the editor of Practical Approaches to Electrical Engineering, a book series that is published by CRC Press. Not surprisingly, his book is the first one in the series and has been followed by five other books to date. This book is a great reference for a hands-on approach toward understanding, construction, and use of a variety of home-made, short-range radar systems.
