Android Apps for Engineers

The smartphone has become the handy ubiquitous tool for engineers, who in a previous generation use slide rules, nomograms, handbooks, and pocket calculators. A quick search of Google Play using the keyword "Engineering" and free yields scores of Apps. Design News Slide Show Listed 11 apps for engineers including a mix of android and IOS apps. Since I subscribe to the Android ecosystem, I have filtered to only Android apps listed with author and price:

  1.  EveryCircuit MuseMaze- October 11, 2013 - $10.00
EveryCircuit is possibly the best circuit design and simulation app on the Android market at the moment. It pulls in SPICE models of almost every component out there. Anything that can be done on a bench is in this app -- function generators, oscilloscopes. However, this app takes design to a whole new level of interactivity beyond that of even desktop apps. Watch how every component reacts in the circuit. “Adjust circuit parameters with analog knobs, and the circuit responds to your actions in real time.” A perfect app for testing designs before ever buying a single component. A must have. Free version is available. Get it at Google Play here.
  2. Almost 500 definite and indefinite integrals “organized by functional form.” In other words, a calculus reference app. Get it at Google Play here.
  3. This is a reference with nearly 500 definite and indefinite integrals, organized by functional form. This is an essential resource for any scientist or engineer and a handy reference for calculus students at all levels. Get it at Google Play here.
  4. RealCalc Plus - Quartic Software - August 8, 2013 - $3.49

A solid, tested, scientific calculator. A magnitude above the installed calculators in all mobile products, it is a must for the day-to-day life of any practicing engineer. It is action-packed with converters, trig and algebraic operations, and it can work in hex, octal, or even binary. The free version works well, too. Get it at Google Play here.
  5.  Another circuit simulation app. A bit more straight forward than EveryCircuit, it could come in handy in a pinch. Design and simulate circuits much like common desktop applications. Slightly limited in some of functionality of the competitors. This app is new, and looks quite promising. Get it at Google Play here.
  6. Elektor - Android-Design.NL.
A collection of 14 top-rated apps (10 of them free) will help with some of the more esoteric, but tedious tasks, in electrical engineering. Each app takes a common circuit/or design pattern and lets the user enter values they need, and produces the support figures. For example, the Opamp calculator: Select from inverting/noninverting, enter the figures you need to reach, get the component values out. Or just test what you should receive in ideal situations. They also have a RF & Microwave Toolbox, Analog Toolbox, Ohm’s Law, PCB trace calculator, LED resistor calculator, and of course, a resistor color code lookup app. They have a beta out for a Wind Turbine Estimator, for calculating the output per “x” time, for those interested. Get it at Google Play here.
  7.  Engineering Handbook Lite -Twenty Technologies Pvt Ltd- September 25, 2012 - free Features available in engineering handbook are Materials, Numbers, Mechanics, Engineering Components and Metal Cutting Components. View various engineering related formulas and calculate values. Engineering Handbook app enables you to work with Engineering Handbook directly on your Android smart phone.
