The technology of Iridium gives truly global coverage, but there are
countries which are blocked for coverage due to politics, and some where just having a handset, let alone using it to make a
call, can get you hauled into jail as a terrorist. Customs at the port
of entry don't necessarily confiscate a handset, letting the innocent
tourist land in a trap. Supposedly you can get licenses from the DoT in
India for example, but I haven't been able to find the procedure on line.
Traveler beware.
