 Netflix Inc. subscribers have seen a lot more spinning wheels lately as they wait for videos to load, thanks to a standoff deep in the Internet. The online-video service has been at odds with Verizon Communications Inc. and other broadband providers for months over how much Netflix streaming content they will carry without being paid additional fees. Now the long simmering conflict has heated up and is slowing Netflix,

If you've noticed a recent slowdown in your Netflix service, it isn't anything to do with Verizon, according to a J.P. Morgan analyst who says he's had conversations with the streaming video company

Paid-peering deals, which happen at interconnection points around the U.S., are not considered to be a "Net neutrality" issue by the FCC. Netflix has reached a paid-peering-interconnection agreement with Verizon, both companies confirmed to TIME on Monday. The deal, which establishes a direct connection between the two companies to improve service for users, comes two months after Netflix struck a similar deal with Comcast.

Verizon wants Netflix to stop blaming the Internet Service Provider for any streaming issues customers may be having when watching TV shows and movies. In a cease-and-desist letter sent to Netflix, Verizon said Netflix is making "false accusations" that have the "potential to harm the Verizon brand" and is engaging in "deceptive behavior."

Last week, Verizon got angry at Netflix blaming them for poor video streaming. Now, Netflix is responding to Verizon by telling them that they will not stop telling customers that their specific Internet service provider is to blame for any poor streaming. Netflix did say that they were running “transparency tests” which led to customers getting the error message and that such tests would end June 16, though Netflix would consider running the error messages again.
